Ideas for Slaveikov square

A competition for students' ideas about one of the most important public spaces in Sofia organised by the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria

This was a project elaborated with a fellow student. Slaveikov square is one of the most important public spaces in the centre of Sofia. It is famous for the book market which has been there for about 20 years. The problem is that despite the cultural function it is supposed to have, the place is becoming more and more unpleasant for the people. It is covered with dirty nylons, there is not enough space for the pedestrians and the atmosphere is gloomy. We think that the square should provide more space for the passers-by and become more attractive for the citizens and guests of Sofia. According to us, the book market in its current condition has no place here. Books need special care and conditions which this open-air market is not providing. Culture has been part of this place for a long time (the City Library is located on the same square) and the relationship between them should not be broken. And the square could look better without much effort. We propose in our project a renovation of the square which includes: removal of the market tables; placing urban furniture; making a fountain. Our proposal includes a few mobile volumes which could be used as small exhibition places and/or places for reading or just for a short break. In our opinion, the square needs only to be taken care of by the people and in return it will give them a place for rest or place for exposition. Because the essence of public spaces is that these are spaces for the people to get together and enjoy activities together.

The competition brief was asking the question: "If we want Sofia to become the cultural capital of Europe in 2019, do we have to accept the current condition of the square?". I think that firstly Sofia should become the favourite and beloved capital of Bulgaria and only after it could become the cultural capital of whatever.
