Urban furniture design
A project from my 7th semester
The task was to design modular urban furniture which would also be sustainable.
The idea for the equilateral triangles came from the fact that this figure is one of the most equilibrative and, therefore, one of the most stable. At first I wanted to work only with the equilateral triangles but because of ergonomic issues concerning the backrest, I had to include another element. I chose a isosceles triangle with the right angle to function as a backrest. Then I could easily create the other pieces of the furniture family - waste bins, pots for plans, water fountains and even a bike stand.
Benches
Bench type 1
Type 1 is made of equilateral triangles, mounted on a steel plank making the connection with the ground. The triangular elements are placed in a steel shoe. All the elements are "strung" on two steel rods to assure the stability of the bench. Depending on the number of elements, there can be different lengths of benches and single seats.
Type 2 is made of two triangles - one isosceles and one equilateral.
They are placed in two steel shoes providing the connection with the ground and "strung" on three steel rods assuring the stability of the bench. Depending on the number of elements, there can be benches with different length as well as singular seats.

Bench type 3
Type 3 is a double bench made of two equilateral and one isosceles triangles. The equilateral triangular elements are placed in steel shoes connected to the ground. The isosceles triangles act like a double-sided backrest and all elements are "strung" on steel rods one after the other, providing the stability of the bench.
Type 4 is made of two isosceles and one equilateral triangles. One of the isosceles triangles acts like a backrest and the other as a "leg-support". The equilateral triangle functions as a seat and "leg-support". The "leg-supports" are placed in steel shoes connected to the ground. All elements are connected by steel rods. Different lengths and configurations are possible.
Bench type 4
Water fountains, pots for plants and waste bins
The water fountains, pots for plants and waste bins are all made of equilateral triangular elements with different size. The waste bins and the pots have a removable metal tin box inside for easy maintenance. Each piece of the urban furniture stands on a low triangular steel stand connected to a triangular steel plank. The pots could be mobile.
